INTRODUCTION:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ModMenu is a program that lets you choose from a list of available modules
in a directory to play with a .MOD player. It can be used as a shell to any
player of your choice. The flexibility and power of this program are in no
way forfeited because of its compact size. Great efforts have been put into
this program to keep it as small, simple, and easy to use as possible. It
offers all the options of other, much bigger, rivals. There is work in
progress to enhance ModMenu with several other options to suit the needs of
users, and any and all suggestions from you are welcome and will be taken
into consideration for future developments.
FEATURES:
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
∙ A module, or .MOD, player such as DMP or WOWII and some .MOD files!
∙ A 286 or better with 1 meg RAM, VGA card and monitor.
NOTE: A 386 or better with 2+ meg RAM is strongly recommended
for optimum performance, especially if your module player
needs a lot of memory.
∙ DOS version 3.0 or later.
TESTING OF MODMENU: ModMenu was tested on...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
≡ A 286/12 MHZ with 1 MB RAM, SVGA monitor, and DOS v5.0.
≡ A 386/33 MHZ with 4 MB RAM, SVGA monitor, and DOS v6.2.
ModMenu was NEVER tested on...
≡ Anything slower than a 286/12 MHZ or faster than a 386/33 MHZ.
≡ A system with a monochrome display.
NOTES:
^^^^^^
ModMenu performed exceptionally well on the 286/12 MHZ with 1 MB RAM. The
time it took to load up 55 modules was only about 2.3 seconds! That's
approximately .041 seconds per module...on a 286!
Feel free to test ModMenu on your system and report anything unusual to the
author. Although extensive testing has been performed on ModMenu for any bugs,
we do not guarantee that it doesn't contain any. If you find a bug, please
let me know.
LIMITATIONS IN THE UNREGISTERED, SHAREWARE VERSION:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
∙ ModMenu will only load 35 modules.
∙ There is a delay at the beginning of the program.
(After the Apex (R) Software logo)
∙ Annoying "Unregistered" messages and screens.
REGISTRATION FEE:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The basic fee for this program is $10.00 (ten dollars). For a list of
what registered users will get, please see section "WHAT REGISTERED
USERS GET" below.
We will put as many modules as possible in this disk, and we are
not responsible if you already have one or more of the ones we
send.
USING MODMENU:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ModMenu was designed with simplicity and ease of usage in mind, so there
isn't much under this section.
GETTING STARTED AND THE CONFIGURATION WINDOW:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
ModMenu is started by typing "MM" at the DOS prompt. The first time
you run ModMenu, you will be prompted for the description of the module
player that you would like to use, the path to the executable of the module
player, and finally the path to your .MOD directory. Once you have entered
a value, press Enter to move on to the next field. The program comes with
sample default values for tutorial purposes. The first time you run the
program, the configuration menu will look something like this:

Find, Loop, Randomize, Exit, Tag/Untag All, Configure - [ ] Loop [ ] Random
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the "Using" prompt, enter the description of the module player that
you would like to use, NOT the executable (EXE) file. For example, if you
are using DMP v3.0, you might put something like "Dual Module Player v3.0"
at this prompt. You can put anything you want here, as long as it is 28
characters or less.
At the "ExePath" prompt, enter the path and executable file name of the
module player that you indicated in the "Using" prompt. For example, if
you are using DMP v3.0 and it is located in a directory called "MUSIC" on
drive C, you would type at the prompt: C:\MUSIC\DMP.EXE. If you do not
specify an extension, ModMenu will assume that the extension is ".EXE" and
add it in FOR you. You may also enter any parameters you want passed on
to your module player here, separate each parameter with a space. Again,
you may indicate any path as long as it is 28 characters or less. If you
have a path that is longer than 28 characters, see section "THE MM.CFG FILE"
below.
NOTE: The following applies to BOTH the ExePath and the ModPath:
=====
You DO NOT need to enter the drive letter of the directory
that your player or modules are in if the drive is the same
as the CURRENT drive. For example, if you started ModMenu
on drive C: (the current drive), then:
C:\MUSIC\<blah,blah> is the same as \MUSIC\<blah,blah>
At the "ModPath" prompt, enter the path to your modules. For example,
if your modules (.MOD files) are located in a subdirectory called "MOD"
under the directory "MUSIC" on drive C, you would type this at the prompt:
C:\MUSIC\MOD\. Note the "\" at the end of the path, it is required by
ModMenu, but if you do not type it in, ModMenu will do it for you. The
limit for this field is also 28 characters, if you have a path that is
longer than 28 characters, see section "THE MM.CFG FILE" below.
At the "Delay" prompt, enter a value between 1 and 9 for the delay of
the control panel that appears when you play multiple files. You can also
use the left and right arrow keys here to either decrease (left) or increase
(right) the value. This value controls how long the control panel remains on
the screen before going on to with the next song. This gives you the chance
to abort, repeat, skip songs, etc. Enter 1 (one) for virtually no delay. The
greater the value, the longer the delay (9 being the longest).
PASSING PARAMETERS TO THE PLAYER:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
If your module player accepts parameters on the command line and you
wish to make use of them, enter the parameter(s) AFTER the EXE name of
your module player at the "ExePath" prompt. For example, if you have
DMP v3.0 and wanted to specify looping, you would enter this at the "ExePath"
prompt:
ExePath: C:\MUSIC\DMP.EXE /L
If you want, you can also modify the MM.CFG file with a text editor and
insert the parameter(s) on the 4th (fourth) line. The first character
of this line MUST BE A SPACE; enter the first parameter after
this space. If you need more than one parameter, MAKE SURE each is separated
by a space. See section "THE MM.CFG FILE" below for examples and details.
COMMAND KEYS IN MODMENU:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
NOTE: A tagged file will be indicated by black arrows on either side of the
===== file name.
Up Arrow & Down Arrow : Move highlight bar up or down.
Page Up & Page Down : Move one screen up or down.
Esc or E : Exit ModMenu and return to DOS.
Home & End : Move to the first or last file.
Space Bar : Tag/untag highlighted file.
Enter : Play highlighted file or tagged files.
C : To configure ModMenu.
T : Tag all files in directory.
U : Untag any or all tagged files.
F : Find a file; type the first few characters and
ModMenu will attempt to find a matching file
name starting with these characters.
R : Toggle random playing of tagged files on or off.
L : Toggle loop (continous play) mode on or off.
PLAYING MULTIPLE FILES:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
To play multiple files, use the Space Bar to tag the songs you want. Press
"T" to tag all songs. Hit "Enter" to start playing any (or all) tagged songs.
In between songs, a control panel will appear, you may do the following:
■ Press left to go back one (to repeat a song) or several songs.
■ Press right to skip forward one or more songs.
■ Press "P" to pause.
■ Press Escape to abort and return to main menu.
PLAYING FILES RANDOMLY:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
To play files randomly, use the Space Bar to tag the songs you want played
randomly. Press "T" to tag all songs for random play. Press "R" to turn
the Random toggle on (indicated by a check mark). Hit "Enter" to start
playing any or all tagged songs randomly. In between random songs, a control
panel will appear, you may do the following:
■ Press left to repeat last song.
■ Press right to skip forward one or more songs.
■ Press "P" to pause.
■ Press Escape to abort and return to main menu.
THE MM.CFG (ModMenu Configuration) FILE:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This file should be located in the same directory from which ModMenu was
started. If ModMenu does not find it, you will be prompted to enter new
values and ModMenu will then create a new configuration file and save it in
the current directory. You can edit this file in any text editor. ModMenu
will only read the first 5 (five) lines of this file.
Although you can only enter up to 28 characters when prompted for the
paths within ModMenu, you may modify the configuration file with a text editor
and enter the COMPLETE path to your player and/or modules. ModMenu, however,
will only display the first 28 characters of your path(s). The length for the
description of the player can NOT be changed, it is set at 28.
The format of the configuration file (MM.CFG) is as follows:
1st line: Path and executable file to module player.
2nd line: Path to the directory in which your modules reside.
3rd line: Description of your module player.
4th line: Parameters passed on to your module player.
5th line: Value for the delay of the control panel between multiple play.
Valid values: 1 to 9; 1 for virtually no delay, 9 for the longest
delay.
IMPORTANT!!!
^^^^^^^^^^^^
On the fourth line of the configuration file, you may enter parameters
that you want passed on to the module player. The first character of
this line SHOULD ALWAYS BE A SPACE; enter the first parameter after this
space. If you need more than one parameter, MAKE SURE each parameter
(including the dash or slash) is separated by a space. SEE EXAMPLE BELOW!
Example configuration file:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
C:\MUSIC\DMP.EXE
C:\MUSIC\MOD\
Dual Module Player v3.0
-L -something -something else
